For years, Japan was the land of falling consumer prices. Deflation was the dominant trend causing it to resort to massive money creation to break out of this cycle.

As a result, the Bank of Japan was the original developed-world practitioner of QE — the notorious quantitative easing — which was eventually imitated by other leading central banks, like the Fed and the European Central Bank.
